DEAL DONE: ELKS Confirm a new coach with agreement sign
EDMONTON — On Tuesday, the Edmonton Elks announced changes to their coaching staff, naming Almondo Sewell as the new defensive line coach.
Nate O’Neal, who had held the position since the start of the 2024 season, resigned. O’Neal joined the Elks’ coaching staff as the defensive line coach on March 18, 2024. This change comes after Monday’s announcement that the Elks relieved general manager and head coach Chris Jones of his duties.
Sewell is returning to the Green and Gold, where he played for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019 and won the 103rd Grey Cup in 2015. The 37-year-old was a six-time CFL All-Star and a seven-time West Division All-Star during his time with the Elks. He spent the last three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes (2021-2023), winning his second Grey Cup in 2023.
Over his 185-game CFL career, the Akron product amassed 354 defensive tackles and 69 sacks.
The Double E will be back in action on Friday, July 19, when they head to the nation’s capital to face the Ottawa REDBLACKS. The game starts at 7 p.m. ET.
