HUGE LOOSE: SF Giants lose another crucial key man claim to the Mets
The SF Giants removed two left-handed relievers from their 40-man roster during the All-Star break. Kolton Ingram was outrighted to Sacramento, and Alex Young was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets, as per the team’s transaction log.
SF Giants outright one lefty reliever, lose another in waiver claim to the Mets
There had been no prior announcement that either player was on waivers, which can occasionally happen. These moves reduce the 40-man roster to 38.
The Giants have several players nearing a return from the 60-day injured list. Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb are currently on rehab assignments and are expected back before the end of the month. Ethan Small and Tom Murphy are also nearing returns from injury, with Small already starting a rehab assignment with the ACL Giants.
The Giants needed openings on the 40-man roster to accommodate these returning veterans, which they achieved with these recent moves. Both Ingram and Young recently joined the organization, yet neither made an appearance with San Francisco despite being on the 40-man roster.
Ingram was claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals at the beginning of the month. He has made three appearances with the Sacramento River Cats, allowing two earned runs in three innings and will remain with the Triple-A club.
Young joined the Giants in a surprising trade that sent veteran outfielder Austin Slater to the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants were familiar with Young from his bullpen role in 2022, where he posted a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings without allowing a home run. However, he was non-tendered by the club in the offseason. Young signed with the Reds, posting a 3.72 ERA in 66 outings over the past two seasons, though his 4.85 FIP suggests some luck may have been involved. The 30-year-old has been optioned to Triple-A by the Mets and will serve as a depth option until needed.
