SHOCKING NEWS: Wife Mets general manager and current Yankees executive confirm dead
Rachel Minaya, wife of former Mets general manager and current Yankees executive Omar Minaya, was found dead at their New Jersey home on Saturday at the age of 55, as reported by the NY Post.
A source close to the family confirmed that Omar was not home at the time of Rachel’s death, and suicide has been ruled out as the cause.
Omar Minaya joined the Yankees as a senior adviser to general manager Brian Cashman at the beginning of 2023. He previously served as the Mets’ general manager from 2004 to 2010, where his scouting expertise led to significant signings like Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, helping the Mets reach the NLCS in 2006. He also played a key role in drafting Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey, contributing to the Mets’ 2015 World Series run.
Omar’s career also includes serving as the GM of the Montreal Expos, a scouting role with the Texas Rangers, vice president of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2015, and a special assistant role to multiple GMs from 2017 to 2020.
Notably, Omar discovered Sammy Sosa and Ivan Rodriguez while scouting for the Rangers, according to an ESPN report in 2023.
The couple has two adult sons, Justin and Teddy. Justin is a forward with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Since joining the Yankees, Minaya has been actively involved with the major league team and has visited minor league affiliates and international sites to support Cashman.
In an interview with Forbes in 2023, Omar expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Yankees, saying, “As a kid that grew up in New York his whole life and grew up on the east side of New York City and Queens, to be able to have this opportunity to be here with part of a storied organization like the New York Yankees, for me and my family, it’s great. I’m looking forward to being part of the Yankee family.”
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Queens, Omar met Rachel in 1989, and the couple got engaged during a trip to Italy within a year.
