BREAKING: New York Knicks Confirms Another Blockbuster Deal
After failing to add a veteran center, the New York Knicks have hired a coach to develop their in-house talent.
Yesterday, Ian Begley from SNY reported that “Mark Bryant is joining the Knicks as an assistant coach on Tom Thibodeau’s staff, according to SNY sources.” Bryant is a highly respected NBA assistant coach, known for his expertise in developing big men. Last season, he worked on the Detroit Pistons’ coaching staff under head coach Monty Williams. The Knicks’ previous big man specialist, Kenny Payne, is currently the associate head coach at the University of Arkansas.
Bryant has an extensive coaching background, having served as an assistant coach for several NBA teams over the past two decades, including the Phoenix Suns (2019-2023), Oklahoma City Thunder (2007-2019), Orlando Magic (2005-2007), and Dallas Mavericks (2004-2005).
Before his coaching career, Bryant had a 15-year playing career in the NBA. He was drafted 21st overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1988 and played for 10 different NBA teams, including appearances in the 1990 and 1992 NBA Finals with the Blazers.

Born on April 25, 1965, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Bryant played college basketball at Seton Hall University before entering the NBA. His combination of playing experience and coaching expertise makes him a valuable addition to Tom Thibodeau’s staff.
The Knicks are set to start the season with Mitchell Robinson as their starting center and Jericho Sims as his primary backup. There were reports this summer that New York explored adding another veteran center but have not secured one, nor have they re-signed Precious Achiuwa, a power forward who played as a small ball center last season.
At training camp, rookie centers Ariel Hukporti and Dmytro Skapintsev, who played for New York in the NBA Summer League, will also be competing for roster spots. Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that Sims needs further development, and the Knicks will have at least one other raw big man who could benefit from Bryant’s coaching. This hiring appears to be a smart move by the Knicks’ front office.
Welcome to the team, Mark!
