BREAKING: Georgia Wide Receiver Suspended Indefinitely with immediate removal from the team
Georgia football wide receiver has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest on Friday.
As the 2024 college football season approaches, Georgia’s wide receiver corps has suffered a setback. Rara Thomas was arrested on July 26th and charged with three counts of Cruelty to Children in the 2nd Degree and three counts of Battery – FV. Following his arrest, Thomas has been indefinitely suspended from the program, according to a team source.
The Athens-Clarke County arrest records indicate that no bail has been set at this time. Further details regarding the incident have not yet been provided. Steven Drummond, University of Georgia’s Associate Athletic Director for strategic communications, issued a brief statement: “This is a pending legal matter. We will have no further comment at this point.”
This is not Thomas’ first encounter with the law in Athens. He was arrested in January 2023 on charges of Family Violence and False Imprisonment, though those charges were eventually dropped, and he faced no legal punishment.
A former 4-star recruit from Eufaula, Alabama, Thomas joined the Bulldogs in 2023 via the transfer portal and had been a significant contributor to his former team, the Mississippi State Bulldogs. During the 2023 season with Georgia, Thomas appeared in 11 games, amassing 383 receiving yards on 23 catches and one touchdown. He was expected to play an even larger role in the Bulldogs’ offense in 2024.
Thomas’ arrest comes less than a week before the Bulldogs are set to begin their fall camp for the 2024 season. This season is considered one of the most challenging schedules Georgia has ever faced, with multiple top-10 teams on the road. Fall camp practices are set to begin on Thursday, August 1st.
Georgia’s first game of the 2024 season will take place in Atlanta against the Clemson Tigers. This will be their first matchup with Clemson since the 2021 season opener, which Georgia won 10-3. The Bulldogs went on to win their first national title in 41 years that season and have not lost a regular-season game since. However, they will start this season without Thomas as the investigation continues.
