Report: Packers, QB Love agree to four-year, $220M contract

Spread the love

The Green Bay Packers took a bold gamble in the 2023 NFL offseason by trading four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. This move was intended to pave the way for Jordan Love, whom they had selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, to lead the offense. At the time, many criticized the Packers for moving on from Rodgers, similar to how they were criticized when they transitioned from Brett Favre.

Much like when Rodgers took over in 2008, it quickly became clear that the Packers had made the right choice. Despite a slow start due to limited regular-season playing time for both him and his receivers, Love dazzled in the second half of the season.

By the end of the season, Love had achieved a 64.2% completion rate, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating. These stats were better than those of Rodgers and Favre in their respective first seasons as the Packers’ starting quarterback.

The Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love Sign a 4-Year $220 Million Contract Extension

After trading Rodgers to the Jets, the Packers and Jordan Love finalized a two-year contract that not only increased his salary for the previous season but also bought out his fifth-year option for 2024. The plan was to give Love an opportunity to prove his worth, with the potential for a more lucrative deal later if he succeeded.

Prove himself he did. Because of last year’s contract, Love was unable to negotiate a new extension until May of this year. Since then, there have been various speculations about his potential earnings.

According to Ian Rapoport, Love and the Packers have reached an agreement on a four-year, $220 million contract. This deal not only marks the largest contract in Packers history but also makes him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love May Not Be the NFL’s Highest Paid Quarterback for Long

Earlier this offseason, the Detroit Lions awarded Jared Goff a $53 million annual contract, while the Jacksonville Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence $55 million per year. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also commands $55 million annually.

It’s uncertain how long Love will hold the title of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys might surpass him with his next contract, whether it comes from his current team or a new one when he becomes a free agent in 2025.
