Just In: Yankees acquire speedy outfielder from Blue Jays For a Record Fee
The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Cam Eden from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for monetary considerations, the team announced earlier today. He is a 26-year-old outfielder with tremendous speed but a weak bat who should give much-needed outfield depth to their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton. There isn’t much contact or power to speak of here, but the Yankees may see something in the blazing-fast outfielder on the offensive side of the ball that we do not.
Eden, a right-handed batter and thrower, made his Major League debut last season, getting his first hit and run for Toronto.
Cam Eden Acquired By Yankees From Blue Jays
While Cam Eden only recorded an 81 wRC+ in Triple-A last season, he managed to steal 53 bases in 131 games, being caught just four times. Eden is a speedy outfielder who excels on the basepaths and can cover all three outfield positions, though his bat is less impressive.
His contact skills are below average, with a strikeout rate exceeding 27% this season, and he doesn’t offer much power. This season, Eden’s performance at the plate has declined further, with a 62 wRC+ and a .299 OBP in the offense-heavy International League.
His 26 steals in 33 attempts are also a step down from last year, suggesting this acquisition is more about adding depth than making a significant Major League impact. With outfielders like Brandon Lockridge traded at the deadline and Everson Pereira out for the season with a UCL injury, adding depth to the AAA roster makes sense.
With some infield experience, Cam Eden could potentially be a versatile utility player for the Yankees, someone they might move around the diamond. However, his lack of offensive success in the upper minors is concerning.
That said, speed is always valuable, especially for a team like the Yankees, who have several slower players at the Major League level. Eden’s speed could provide a unique asset in certain situations.
