In recent years, the NFL and politics have become more closely connected, with players increasingly using their platforms to speak out on global issues. Whether people agree with it or not, politics has become a part of sports, and NFL athletes are no exception. As the 2024 U.S. presidential election draws near and social media continues to provide a platform for sharing opinions, many athletes are openly expressing their views, even if it means facing political repercussions.

On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins long snapper Blake Ferguson, a former 2019 CFP national champion, publicly responded to the White House’s official Twitter account after it called for a ban on assault weapons. The ongoing debate on gun rights and the Second Amendment remains a deeply divisive issue in the U.S., particularly in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump.

NFL Long Snapper Blake Ferguson: Takes Shot at White House Socials

On Wednesday, the official White House Twitter account posted a graphic advocating for a ban on assault weapons, sparking a strong reaction from Miami Dolphins long snapper Blake Ferguson. The special teams player retweeted the post, adding his own comment: “Put assault weapons in only the hands of the Feds you’re currently weaponizing? Yeah, kick rocks.”

Ferguson appears to be expressing his concern over the White House’s efforts to limit gun rights for American citizens, possibly fearing that such regulations could pave the way for a police or military state. Known for being outspoken about his political views, Ferguson recently retweeted Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance and has frequently expressed dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden since June. Most notably, he recently rejected claims that supporters of Donald J. Trump were shifting their allegiance to Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Blake Ferguson: Longtime Miami Dolphins Special Teamer

Blake Ferguson, a standout athlete from Buford High School in Georgia, secured three football championships before joining the LSU Tigers, where he played from 2015 to 2019. As a two-time team captain, Ferguson started 52 games as a long snapper, capping off his college career with a College Football Playoff National Championship in his final season. During his time with LSU, he also recorded three tackles and one fumble recovery.

The Miami Dolphins selected Ferguson with the 185th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, making him the first long snapper drafted in the sixth round or earlier since Colin Holba in 2017. Notably, no long snapper has been drafted since 2021, a year that set a league record with two being selected. In his four NFL seasons, Ferguson has registered seven tackles and one fumble recovery, and he has maintained a perfect attendance record, not missing a single game. In 2023, he secured a three-year, $4 million contract extension with the Dolphins.
