One week of Fall camp is in the books for LSU, and some players have capitalized on opportunities for playing time. Youth and potential breed intrigue, so it’s only natural to wonder which freshmen could make an impact. While no players from LSU’s seventh-ranked incoming class are expected to start, several are trending to contribute heavily this year. In an ode to the future, we’ll profile five prospective freshmen impact players.

Potential Impact Freshmen for LSU

Gabe Reliford – Defensive End

The Shreveport native and Evangel High School graduate, Gabe Reliford, enrolled in January to jumpstart his college football journey. His early arrival paid off during spring practice, where he quickly made an impact. Reliford showcased his athleticism throughout the spring, highlighted by a two-sack performance in the spring game.

LSU’s left tackle and first-round prospect, Will Campbell, praised Reliford during a recent media session.

“He’s a great player, and the future is bright for Gabe Reliford. He’s one of the hardest-working kids on the team; he’s got it,” said Campbell.

As a pass rusher, Reliford has already impressed, weighing in at 270 pounds as a true freshman. He could easily add more weight and transition inside to strengthen one of the team’s thinner position groups. With a depth chart that includes Sai’vion Jones, Bradyn Swinson, and Da’Shawn Womack, the Tigers are well-stocked at defensive end. However, Reliford is poised to make an impact this season, regardless of where he lands on the depth chart.

Trey’Dez Green – Tight End

TREY'DEZ GREEN COMMITS TO LSU: THE NEXT TEU??

Standing at 6’7″ and 245 pounds, Green is hard to miss on the field even before the action starts. Although he didn’t enroll early, Green’s ability to quickly grasp the offense has caught the attention of head coach Brian Kelly this fall. It’s likely no coincidence that sophomore tight end Mac Markway chose to transfer from LSU shortly after Green’s arrival.

Green isn’t the only towering presence at tight end for the Tigers—Ka’Morreun Pimpton stands at 6’6″. However, what sets Green apart is his exceptional explosiveness and agility for someone his size. His inclusion on LSU’s basketball roster further highlights his rare athleticism. Expect Green to be a key freshman contributor, particularly in the red zone.

PJ Woodland – Cornerback

Another early enrollee, Woodland made a strong impression on his teammates during spring practice with his competitive spirit. Despite his 160-pound frame, he never shied away from the challenge of going up against future draft picks like Kyren Lacy. By the end of the spring, Woodland had earned a spot in the two-deep depth chart.

In high school, Woodland excelled on both sides of the ball in Mississippi’s highest classification and was named the 7A Defensive Player of the Year. Since arriving at LSU, he has already outperformed his three-star ranking. With former starter Zy Alexander only recently cleared for full contact, Woodland has the potential to move up to the first team.

Dominick McKinley – Defensive Tackle

Five-star DL Dominick McKinley is confident in his decision heading into Friday's reveal - On3

McKinley was the top-rated recruit in LSU’s 2024 class, filling the school’s most pressing need. Of course, he’s on the list. The 6’6″ 315-pound tackle possesses great size while also possessing the speed to be a disruptive force up front.

The highly ranked rookie competed in one-on-one drills against starting offensive lineman but dominated the underclassmen. No coach wants to rely on a freshman on the inside of his defensive line. Fortunately, Bo Davis will not rely on McKinley by the time he makes his way into the rotation.

Ju’Juan Johnson – Star

LSU was able to secure the commitment of the all-time Louisiana high school offensive yardage leader, who had originally committed to Colorado to play defensive back. Johnson’s athletic ability has never been called into doubt, but it’s difficult to predict how offensive players will adjust to playing on the opposite side of the ball.

The youngster has added more than 15 pounds since his high school quarterback days in order to improve his defensive abilities. His hips and ball skills are all they were expected to be, and he’s now ranked as the backup star defence to Major Burns.

Names to Remember

More freshman are expected to participate in 2024, but there are also players to be excited about in the coming years. Dashawn Spears and Kylin Jackson are likely to get reps at safety and special teams. True freshmen edge. Kolaj Cobbins has appeared impossible to block at times. Finally, redshirt freshman wideout Shelton Sampson has made a few outstanding receptions, demonstrating the qualities that earned him a five-star ranking. Michael Turner was a predicted wide receiver with explosive speed who also excelled as a cornerback. He has the potential to be a high-upside defender once he gains weight for his 6-1 body.
