Under head coach Matt Painter, Purdue has prioritized scheduling tough non-conference games and securing a matchup in Indianapolis. This strategy not only helps win over the state, where Purdue often trails behind IU in terms of historical success, but also gives them a chance to showcase their program to promising recruits from the Indy area and beyond. Although West Lafayette is relatively close, the extra distance can impact attendance at events.

Purdue’s enthusiasm for the Crossroads Classic, despite occasional challenges, and their desire to continue playing in Indy after the event ended, underscores their commitment. Previously, they participated in the Wooden Tradition. Now, it has been officially announced that the Indy Classic will make a return with a double-header featuring four prominent programs, as revealed this morning by Gainbridge Fieldhouse on their social media channels.

We already knew that Purdue would be facing Texas A&M, but the second game lineup was still a mystery. Now it’s confirmed: Butler and Wisconsin will also be featured, making for a compelling mix of a Big Ten opponent and an in-state rival. It’s shaping up to be an impressive lineup.

The fans at these events have consistently shown great support and deserve to enjoy top-quality basketball. Given that Indianapolis is the state’s premier city and home to the Pacers, it makes sense for Purdue to play there annually. I don’t expect this to change anytime soon.

So, are you planning to attend the Indy Classic? Tickets will go on sale August 23rd, and they’re likely to sell out quickly. It could be a great chance to catch the new-look Boilermakers, especially since tickets for games at Mackey Arena might be tough to get this season.
