Report: Seahawks Cut Ties With Prolific Quarterback
The Seattle Seahawks currently have three quarterbacks on their roster, but it’s expected that they will keep only two as they head into Week 1. Geno Smith is clearly secured as the team’s starting quarterback.
This situation leaves Sam Howell and PJ Walker competing for the remaining spot. According to Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, Smith and Howell are likely to make the final roster, which would mean Walker might be released when the 53-man roster is finalized. Seattle has until August 27 to make their decision on the number of quarterbacks to retain.
Dugar noted in his August 12, 2024 article, “Seahawks roster projection: Tough decisions loom at RB, WR, CB,” that Howell performed better against the Chargers than he had in training camp, which was anticipated by coach Mike Macdonald.
“There might not be a significant difference in talent between Howell and Walker, but Howell has been the backup throughout camp, and the trade investment in him indicates he’s likely to be Smith’s backup unless there is a drastic failure in the remaining preseason games.”

Sam Howell did not receive particularly positive reviews during training camp practices, but he improved significantly in his first preseason game. Against the Los Angeles Chargers on August 10, Howell passed for 130 yards, threw one touchdown, and did not have any interceptions, completing 59% of his passes. He also contributed 17 rushing yards.
In contrast, PJ Walker completed only 40% of his passes for 61 yards and did not record any touchdowns. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald praised Howell’s performance, noting, “I thought Sam played really well by moving the offense. Not all the starters were on the field—only a few of the interior linemen were in there. It was great to see him lead the team down the field in the second half.
“Obviously, we wanted to finish that drive, but I thought we operated well. He made some excellent decisions and threw the ball well. While no performance is ever perfect, I was definitely pleased with his performance.”
