Report: Yankees announce worst-case scenario with Jazz Chisholm injury, roster move incoming
It’s unfortunate that this is what passes for “good news” with the New York Yankees these days—something that seems all too familiar since … 2010? It certainly feels that way. However, it looks like the team might have gotten what could be considered the “best-case scenario” with Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The Yankees’ big trade deadline acquisition exited Monday’s game with an elbow injury after an awkward slide into home plate. Chisholm initially downplayed the injury, and for a moment, it seemed believable.
X-rays came back negative, and he was reportedly feeling better. But everyone knew that the MRI would provide the crucial details. When the words “UCL injury” were mentioned after the imaging results, there was fear that he’d be sidelined until 2025.
Although the full picture isn’t entirely clear yet, the Yankees reportedly believe that their new third baseman could return in 3-4 weeks and might avoid surgery, likely Tommy John, in a surprising turn of events after the mood had soured on Tuesday night.
Fans are still holding their breath because nothing is set in stone, but for now, they can cling to a bit of optimism until there’s more definitive news.

Chisholm wasn’t expected to be the savior of the 2024 Yankees roster (most agree Brian Cashman should have done more at the trade deadline), but he quickly became a vital piece when he stepped in as the starting third baseman. Despite being primarily a second baseman and center fielder, Chisholm made an immediate impact, hitting seven home runs with a .316 average in just 14 games.
His arrival was a breath of fresh air for a Yankees team that, despite many roster changes, was still sorely lacking in athleticism and energy—a deficiency painfully highlighted by their 11-24 stretch that left fans on the brink of despair.
Now, with Chisholm expected to go on the IL, the Yankees are reportedly calling up the red-hot Oswald Peraza, whose bat has been on fire at Triple-A. While Oswaldo Cabrera has been performing well and can cover third base, Peraza might be strategically used to give Anthony Volpe a few days off at shortstop, as Volpe has been struggling and recently had to be evaluated after fouling a ball hard off his foot.
But with Aaron Boone at the helm, there’s concern that Peraza might end up sitting on the bench, merely waiting in the wings until Chisholm returns. Fans can only hope the right strategy is put into play.
