Report: Five Star Safety Ranked By Rivals is Headliner In Miami’s Recruiting Class

There are numerous reasons to be optimistic about the Miami Hurricanes’ 2025 recruiting class, which is presently ranked ninth by 247Sports.

Mario Cristobal and his staff had a busy summer on the recruiting path, and safety Hylton “Drake” Stubbs was one of the top players they signed.

Stubbs is one of my favourite members of the 2025 class, and there’s a reason he’s regarded as one of the best safeties in the country.

While he had already committed to USC, when Stubbs backed out in June, Miami emerged as a strong contender to secure his commitment, which they achieved in July.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Stubbs is the #4 safety in the 2025 class, the #7 player in Florida, and the #47 player overall. According to Rivals, Stubbs is a 5-star recruit and a top 20 talent in the USA.

Stubbs stands 6’2″ and weighs 190 pounds, but he still has room to grow, making him an even more fearsome opponent.

Stubbs, who plays for Mandarin High School in the Jacksonville region, has been a force for the Mustangs, propelling them to the top of the Sunshine State’s rankings.

As a junior, Stubbs helped Mandarin win the 3M State Championship game. During the 2023 season, Stubbs recorded 97 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss (TFLs), 6 interceptions, and 6 pass breakups.

Stubbs is a member of one of the most spectacular defensive back classes in college football. Miami has also received pledges from Top 100 athletes Amari Wallace, Jaboree Antoine, and Bryce Fitzgerald.

As a prospect, Stubbs offers old-school tenacity and toughness to the safety position, with a strong ability to defend both the run and the pass. He can trace the ball in the air while still being aggressive in the open field, making him an excellent tackler. He may not be Ed Reed or Sean Taylor in either category, but he does everything really well.

Having played in a variety of defensive tactics throughout his time at Mandarin, Stubbs’ physical style of play appears to complement Lance Guidry’s defensive strategy.

In 2024, you’ll need a safety who can impact the game in a variety of ways, and Stubbs meets the bill. Stubbs is constantly around the football, whether he’s dropping back into coverage (6 interceptions in 2023) or blowing up a run play in the backfield (8.5 TFLs).
