JUST IN: Rangers highly crucial top key man involved in frightening car accident that leads to his career ending
The Texas Rangers received troubling news from their Minor League system as one of their up-and-coming prospects was involved in a serious off-the-field incident.
Luis Ramirez, a right-handed pitching prospect currently with the High-A Hickory Crawdads, was injured in a single-vehicle accident on a wet road while driving to the stadium on Monday. He sustained multiple injuries and is currently hospitalized in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, near where Hickory plays, as reported by Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
Although the full extent of Ramirez’s injuries hasn’t been disclosed, the fact that he spent the night in the hospital raises significant concerns. In situations like this, the focus should be on ensuring Ramirez’s well-being before considering any return to the field.
Rangers pitching prospect Luis Ramirez injured in car accident
At just 22 years old and in only his second year of professional baseball, Luis Ramirez is a highly promising young pitching prospect. The Rangers selected Ramirez in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He played college baseball at Long Beach State, where he posted an impressive 2.14 ERA across seven starts during his sophomore season before being drafted. In his first professional season last year, Ramirez went 1-4 with a 4.03 ERA over 18 appearances, including 12 starts, with Single-A Down East. Before his recent accident, Ramirez had a 1-5 record with an 8.45 ERA through 24 appearances and four starts this season.
During the 2023 season, Ramirez was ranked as the No. 41 prospect in the Rangers’ system by The Athletic, which highlighted his “high-floor repertoire” as a key factor in his potential success with the organization.
The hope is that Ramirez will make a full recovery and return to Hickory as soon as possible to continue his development within the Rangers’ system.
