GOOD NEWS: Ohio State football’s Ryan Day appointed another huge deal
Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day and his Buckeyes are preparing for the 2024-25 season, which is set to kick off in just over a week. Despite consistently being close, Ohio State has yet to capture a national championship under Day’s leadership.
Adding to the stakes, Day recently gained additional motivation with the announcement of potential new bonuses to his contract, as reported by Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch.
Kaufman noted that Day “could earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra bonus pay after the university revised the performance-based incentives in his contract.”
This decision, still pending approval from the full board of trustees after passing a committee review, could allow Day to receive up to $1.55 million in incentives.
This season marks the debut of the new 12-team college football playoff format, which is believed to be the reason behind the increased incentives for Day if his team qualifies. While no team is guaranteed a spot, Ohio State and Georgia are widely expected to be contenders in this year’s playoff due to the reduced significance of the regular season.
Is this the year for Ohio State?
In 2024, Ohio State football is fielding what might be its most talented roster in years. However, this coincides with a significant uncertainty at the quarterback position, as Kansas State transfer Will Howard will start the season after Kyle McCord’s disappointing performance last year.
Ryan Day is also aiming to end Ohio State’s three-year losing streak against the reigning national champion Michigan Wolverines. Michigan is expected to be less formidable this season after the departure of head coach Jim Harbaugh and several key players from last year’s elite squad.
Ohio State enters the season ranked number two in both the AP and coaches polls. If they fail to break through and win this year, speculation about Day’s job security could intensify.
