DONE: Miami adds another 5-star from Tennessee
On Wednesday, the Miami basketball program revealed a major addition to its non-conference schedule: a matchup against Tennessee at Madison Square Garden on December 10, part of the Jimmy V. Classic. This game will be Miami’s second encounter with an SEC team this season.
Earlier this summer, it was announced that Miami would host Arkansas in the ACC-SEC Challenge. This will mark the second year in a row that John Calipari and Jim Larranaga face off in this event, with Calipari having secured a victory over Larranaga last season while coaching Kentucky.
In November, Miami will compete in the Charleston Classic, alongside teams such as Drake, Florida Atlantic, Nevada, Oklahoma State, Seton Hall, Vanderbilt, and VCU. The bracket for the Charleston Classic has yet to be released. Miami previously won the Charleston Classic in 2014.
This will be Miami’s first appearance in the Jimmy V. Classic. The Hurricanes have played in the New York area in three of the last four seasons. Tennessee leads the all-time series against Miami 3-1, with each team having won once on neutral courts.

Miami and Tennessee will tip off at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN, followed by Arkansas and Michigan at 9 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader. Miami’s sole victory over Tennessee came during the 1991 San Juan Shootout with a 72-60 win. Tennessee has previously defeated Miami in Montgomery, Alabama (1955), Coral Gables (1995), and Knoxville (1996).
Last season, Tennessee posted a 27-9 record, including a 14-4 mark in the SEC to claim the regular season conference title. The team, led by All-American and NBA first-round pick Dalton Knecht, reached the 2024 Midwest Regional Final but fell one game short of reaching the Final Four, losing to Purdue.
Both Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and Miami’s Jim Larranaga have ties to Providence College. Larranaga was a standout player there from 1968-71, while Barnes coached at Providence from 1988-94. Tennessee is ranked 13th in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25, led by star guard Zakai Zeigler.
