REPORT: Clemson Tigers Boss was stopped by Using Transfer Portal

If the Clemson Tigers secure the ACC title and a spot in the College Football Playoff, they’ll do it on their own terms.

For Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney, this means avoiding the transfer portal—a choice that has sparked considerable debate, given that most Division I programs are actively using the portal to boost their talent.

Earlier this season, Stewart Mandel of The Athletic labeled Swinney as ‘Defiant Dabo’ for his refusal to use the portal, noting that Swinney’s 2024 recruiting class is relatively small, with only 13 players and just one five-star recruit. Mandel remarked that he couldn’t recall another prominent coach so resolutely going against the grain.

Supporters have defended Swinney, including ESPN’s Rece Davis, who expressed frustration with the criticism directed at him. Swinney, who boasts a 170-43 record, eight ACC titles, two national title game appearances, and national championships in 2016 and 2018, has a resume that is Hall of Fame-worthy.

Clemson athletic director Graham Neff recently addressed the media to unveil Clemson Ventures, a new initiative aimed at increasing revenue through a corporate model. During this announcement, Neff was asked about Swinney’s decision to bypass the transfer portal. Neff expressed strong support for Swinney, praising his strategy and adaptability.

“This season will test Swinney’s convictions,” Neff said, according to tigernet.com. “We’re in active engagement with Coach Swinney, supporting his vision and strategy, and adapting to the evolving landscape, including roster management.”

With a 9-4 record last season, the Tigers are aiming for their first ACC title since 2020 and their first CFP appearance since then. They will kick off the season against No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta on August 31.
