ICYMI: 5-star Decommits from Nittany Lions just now
Omari Gaines, a 3-star defensive back from New Jersey, announced on Friday that he has decommitted from Penn State’s 2025 football recruiting class. Gaines shared his decision on social media.
Initially committing to Penn State in March 2024, Gaines is rated as a 5-star defensive back by the 247Sports Composite. Last season, he played at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark and is set to play at St. Peter’s Prep in 2026.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 180 pounds, Gaines has also received offers from schools like Boston College, Duke, Rutgers, West Virginia, and Syracuse. He visited Penn State last spring before committing and, according to NJ.com, had been a regular attendee at Penn State camps, building a strong rapport with associate head coach Terry Smith.
Following Gaines’ decision, Penn State’s 2025 recruiting class now includes 11 commitments. The Nittany Lions are ranked seventh nationally and second in the Big Ten, according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
