DONE: Seahawks Acquire High Rated 4-Star OLB From Jaguars
The Seahawks have been active on the trade front recently and have now added Trevis Gipson to their roster. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the fifth-year edge rusher is being acquired from the Jaguars in exchange for a late-round pick.
Gipson started his career with the Bears, where he made 19 starts in 40 appearances. He had a breakout year in 2021 with seven sacks, despite playing only 49% of the defensive snaps. Although his sack total dropped to three the following season, his pressure numbers (18) were consistent with his 2021 performance. Gipson was released by the Bears during final roster cuts last summer and subsequently signed with the Titans. However, he saw limited action, playing just 15% of the defensive snaps across eight games. He later signed with the Jaguars in free agency, but before making his regular-season debut with them, he was traded to Seattle.
Jacksonville will now rely on an edge group led by Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, while Gipson will aim to secure a rotational role with the Seahawks. Seattle recently traded Darrell Taylor to the Bears, which left them with limited depth behind Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe, and Derick Hall. Gipson’s experience as a starter could prove valuable, especially if injuries occur along the edge.
The trade for Taylor freed up cap space for Seattle, and Gipson comes as a more affordable option. He signed a $1.13 million deal with the Jaguars, and Seattle will take on the remainder of his contract, including a $100K roster bonus. A solid performance in Seattle could enhance his value, whether for an extended tenure with the Seahawks or in free agency next spring.
