According to Gelinas, this tragic event could be a significant factor contributing to Laine’s challenges both on and off the ice. Gelinas shared these insights on BPM Sports’ “On Club du Matin” show on Monday, August 26. He connected Laine’s difficulties to the loss, which occurred while Laine was with the Columbus Blue Jackets, prior to his trade to the Canadiens. Laine’s father passed away unexpectedly at 54 in November 2021, as reported by NHL insider Aaron Portzline, a loss that profoundly affected the young forward. Gelinas emphasized the close bond Laine had with his father, who spent much time with him in both North America and Finland. After his father’s death, Laine’s career trajectory declined; he never completed a full 82-game season and eventually entered the NHL’s Player Assistance Program last winter to address his mental health issues. While some speculated that Laine’s struggles were due to a rumored video game addiction, Gelinas suggested the emotional impact of his father’s passing was likely the more significant factor. However, following his trade to Montreal, Laine expressed optimism about his future, stating on August 20 that he feels mentally strong and ready for the next chapter of his career.
