ICYMI: 5-star QB confirms commits to Florida State on his unofficial visit
Florida State’s coaching staff welcomed several highly-touted prospects to campus in Tallahassee this weekend, with a particular focus on the 2025 recruiting class. Many Seminole fans have been closely watching this group, especially as Florida State’s 2025 recruiting class currently ranks 70th according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. This has caused some concern among the fanbase, particularly as rivals Miami and Florida continue to secure commitments.
Florida State has not landed a commitment in the 2025 class since four-star defensive end Javion Hilson flipped from Alabama back in January following the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban. Despite the Seminoles’ impressive 23-4 record over the past two seasons and the success head coach Mike Norvell has brought to the program, fans expected more momentum in recruiting highly-touted prospects.
However, things took a positive turn on Saturday when Class of 2026 five-star quarterback Brady Smigiel from Newbury Park, California, committed to Florida State. Smigiel, who was in Tallahassee for an unofficial visit, has been on the Seminoles’ radar since they offered him on January 17, 2023. This was his second visit to Florida State in two months, despite being from California.
While some may downplay the significance of a 2026 commitment, Smigiel’s pledge is a major boost for the future foundation of the program. In his two seasons as a starter at Newbury Park, Smigiel has amassed 7,701 yards, 98 touchdowns, and only 25 interceptions.

With Smigiel joining the quarterback ranks alongside Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek, Trever Jackson, and Tramell Jones Jr. (assuming he remains committed), Florida State’s coaching staff appears to have found its stride in quarterback recruiting, setting up a strong core for the program’s future.
