BREAKING: Packers re-sign QB despite brutal preseason
The Green Bay Packers are reportedly planning to re-sign quarterback to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Jordan Love remains the starting quarterback for Green Bay, with Malik Willis taking on the backup role after being traded to the Packers from the Tennessee Titans. Clifford will add extra depth to the team’s quarterback position.
During the 2024 preseason, Clifford played in three games for the Packers, throwing for 207 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He completed 22 of 43 pass attempts, finishing with a preseason passer rating of 62.8.
At 26 years old, Clifford made his NFL debut in 2023, appearing in two games for Green Bay, though he did not attempt any passes. A product of Penn State, Clifford showed potential during his college career but has yet to fully establish himself in the NFL. With Jordan Love leading the Packers, Clifford may have a chance to contribute in the future.
Packers QB situation
Jordan Love, 25, patiently waited for his chance behind Aaron Rodgers after being drafted by the Packers. His opportunity came in 2023 when Green Bay traded Rodgers to the New York Jets, and Love capitalized on it, throwing for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns.
With a high ceiling, Love’s future with the Packers looks promising. Having Malik Willis as a backup is also key, as Willis has played in 11 NFL games, including three starts, and can step in if needed.
As the Packers rely on Love and Willis to lead their quarterback lineup in 2024, having depth remains critical. Sean Clifford provides additional insurance in case of an emergency. Ideally, Love will stay healthy and guide the Packers through a full season, aiming to take them to the playoffs.
