As the New Orleans Saints prepare to open the 2024 NFL season against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon, running back Alvin Kamara is expected to do so without a new contract in place. Kamara attended training camp despite spending the spring away from the team, hoping for a new deal before Week 1, but it seems that opportunity has passed.

Kamara has decided to halt any discussions about a new contract until after the season. “I’m kind of at the point where I’m not even talking about it until after the season,” Kamara recently told reporters.

For the upcoming season, Kamara will account for $18.55 million against the salary cap, the highest total on the Saints’ roster. Last year, he rushed for a career-low 694 yards and five touchdowns while dealing with a persistent ankle injury, appearing in only 13 games.

Kamara had been seeking a restructure or extension, as this is the final season with guaranteed money in his current contract. His cap hit is set to exceed $24 million in 2025. With the Saints projected to be $96.8 million over the cap next season and Kamara’s deal lacking guaranteed money, he could be considered expendable as he approaches his 30th birthday.
