JUST IN: Cubs lose another crucial key man to Pirates lose Justin Steele to elbow soreness
Cubs Falter in Wrigley Return, Blown Lead Results in Loss to Pirates
After a successful 8-1 road trip, the Chicago Cubs returned to Wrigley Field on Monday, hoping to continue their momentum against the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, the Cubs’ performance fell short, as they struggled both offensively and defensively, leading to a disappointing 5-3 loss.
The Cubs appeared to be in control for most of the game, holding the Pirates scoreless through seven innings. Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon delivered an impressive outing, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, striking out three, and walking one. His command on the mound kept the Pirates’ hitters at bay, and the Cubs’ defense provided solid support behind him.
Offensively, the Cubs managed to build a 3-0 lead by the fifth inning, thanks to a crucial two-run triple from Ian Happ. His hit extended the Cubs’ advantage, and with Taillon dealing on the mound, it seemed like the team was well on its way to securing another victory.
However, things took a dramatic turn in the eighth inning. Cubs manager Craig Counsell decided to pull Taillon from the game after seven strong innings, opting to bring in reliever Jorge Lopez. The decision seemed sound at the time, as Lopez had been reliable throughout the season.
“There’s a reason we gave him an extra day,” Counsell explained when asked about his decision to take Taillon out. “We put Jorge Lopez in the game. He’s been wonderful. He’s pitched wonderfully. Obviously didn’t have a good night tonight, but that was the decision . . . and it was an easy decision.”
Unfortunately for the Cubs, Lopez struggled from the moment he stepped on the mound. After recording one out, Lopez allowed a game-tying three-run homer to Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, erasing the Cubs’ lead in a single swing. The Pirates were not done yet, as veteran Andrew McCutchen followed Reynolds’ homer with a solo shot to left field, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead.
The Cubs’ offense, which had been so potent during their road trip, was unable to muster a response in the final two innings. The Pirates added an insurance run in the ninth, sealing their 5-3 victory.
The loss was a stark contrast to the Cubs’ recent success, and it highlighted the challenges of maintaining consistency throughout the long MLB season. The Cubs will look to regroup and address the issues that surfaced in their return to Wrigley as they continue their push for a postseason spot.
