JUST IN NOW: LB 5-star decommitment from Hurricanes and land to Tigers just now
The buzz around Auburn football is growing, and the Tigers’ recruiting momentum is drawing the attention of top prospects. Auburn’s recruiting rankings have surged since Big Cat Weekend, with a steady stream of positive developments.
The Tigers opened their season on Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium against Alabama A&M. Despite the lower-tier opponent, the atmosphere in the stadium was electric, energizing the recruits in attendance. Among the visitors was 5-star linebacker Elijah Melendez.
Melendez, who had previously committed to Miami, decommitted from the Hurricanes just hours before Auburn’s kickoff. He later explained to On3 that family reasons influenced his decision and that he wants to attend a college where he can focus on reaching the NFL. After his weekend visit to Auburn, the Tigers have become the frontrunner in his recruitment.
“The atmosphere was electric; I didn’t expect such a big game considering the opponent, but it was just very lively,” Melendez told On3. “Yeah, I’d say Auburn is leading. I feel like they’re prioritizing me.”
Auburn first extended a scholarship offer to Melendez in April, and he officially visited the Plains over the summer. Hailing from Osceola, Florida, Melendez is ranked as the #17 linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class and the #23 overall prospect in Florida. Although he hasn’t set a decision timeline and is focused on his senior season, all signs point to Melendez eventually becoming a Tiger.
