JUST NOW: Brian Kelly Confirms Heartbreaking injury situation ahead of home opener against Nicholls
Coach Brian Kelly updated the LSU injury report on Tuesday, adding two more players to the list.
Junior defensive end Princeton Malbrue sustained a serious knee injury while covering a kickoff in the second quarter. Kelly mentioned that LSU has filed a complaint, alleging that the Big 12 officiating crew missed a block in the back penalty on the play.
Freshman wide receiver Kyle Parker also suffered an injury, a UCL tear in his elbow, during his only catch of the game against USC, which gained six yards in the first quarter. Kelly indicated that Parker is doubtful for LSU’s game against Nicholls on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
Starting wide receiver Chris Hilton is still dealing with a bone bruise in his ankle from preseason camp. LSU is ensuring that Hilton is fully healthy before he returns to the lineup.
In Hilton and Parker’s absence, redshirt sophomore Aaron Anderson stepped up, catching five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. His 41-yard reception from Garrett Nussmeier late in the fourth quarter moved LSU deep into USC territory.
Kelly also mentioned that redshirt freshman receiver Shelton Sampson will need more playing time, especially if Hilton and Parker are unavailable. “He’s got to be able to play for us,” Kelly said, “and we’ve got to get him on the field. So, this is a big week for him.”
