DONE DEAL JUST NOW: Oklahoma WR 5-STAR Commit Nebraska, over OU, LSU and Oregon just now
On Monday morning, Rivals reported that Oklahoma 5-star wide receiver commit Cortez Mills is planning to visit Nebraska this weekend. The news caught many off guard, particularly because Brent Venables has previously expressed his disapproval of committed recruits visiting other schools. In the 2023 recruiting class, 4-star wideout Ashton Cozart from Flower Mound Marcus (TX) was initially committed to OU but had his offer withdrawn after visiting Oregon, leading him to commit to the Ducks soon after.
However, the situation with Mills seems less severe, as he reassured that his relationship with the Sooners’ coaching staff remains strong. He did mention, though, that he has also developed a solid connection with the Nebraska staff.
“What keeps me interested in Nebraska is the bond I have with the coaches and how they continue to treat me like a top priority,” Mills told John Garcia. “(Venables and his staff) know that I’m committed, so they’re not overly concerned. My connection with Coach V and Coach (Emmett) Jones keeps me locked in with OU.”
In addition to his Nebraska visit, Garcia reported that Mills is considering additional visits to LSU and Oklahoma. While the Sooners still seem to be in a good position with Mills, it appears they will need to keep competing with other programs until National Signing Day.
Shortly after Garcia’s report, Mills made a now-deleted social media post, seemingly in response to fan reactions to his visit: “Y’all crazy lol.”
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 180 pounds, Mills is ranked as the No. 81 overall prospect and the No. 14 wide receiver nationally by Rivals. The Homestead, FL standout verbally committed to Venables on July 1, joining a stellar group of pass catchers in Oklahoma’s 2025 recruiting class.
Alongside Mills, OU has commitments from 5-star playmakers Elijah Thomas (Checotah, OK), Marcus Harris (Mater Dei, CA), Gracen Harris (Ennis, TX), and 4-star receiver Emmanuel Choice (Lancaster, TX).
Former OKC Millwood 5-star wide receiver Jaden Nickens was also committed to the Sooners at one point but decommitted in March before transferring to Sierra Canyon, CA.
Nebraska is coming off a dominant 40-7 win over UTEP, where true freshman quarterback and former 5-star recruit Dylan Raiola threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns. With a promising young quarterback and a storied program, the Cornhuskers could pose a serious challenge to OU in Mills’ recruitment.
In the 2024 recruiting class, Oklahoma pursued 5-star offensive lineman Grant Brix but lost him to Nebraska. In the 2025 class, the Sooners and Cornhuskers are also competing for 5-star linebacker Christian Jones from Omaha Westside (NE).
This Saturday, when Mills is set to visit Lincoln, NE, Matt Rhule and his team will host Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes in a highly anticipated matchup.
