BREAKING: New York Rangers confirms two major blockbuster deals to professional tryout
On Tuesday, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that forward has been invited to the New York Rangers training camp on a professional tryout agreement (PTO). Last season, he was part of the Edmonton Oilers organization, splitting his time between the NHL and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After being invited to Edmonton’s camp on a PTO, Erne earned a one-year contract, playing 24 games with the Oilers, scoring one goal and one assist. His goal came on Dec. 21 against the New Jersey Devils. In 36 games with the Condors, he recorded six goals and six assists, also appearing in two Calder Cup Playoff games.
Erne, originally drafted in the second round (33rd overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2013 NHL Draft, has had a journeyman career. After spending time with the Lightning and their AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch, Erne became a regular NHL player following a trade to the Detroit Red Wings in August 2019. He played four seasons in Detroit before being left unsigned after the 2022-23 season.
In his NHL career, Erne has played 379 games, registering 43 goals and 50 assists. However, he has limited postseason experience, with only three Stanley Cup Playoff appearances, which came in 2019 when the Lightning were famously swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round.

Heading into Rangers training camp, it will be interesting to see where Erne fits, given that the team already has depth on the wing with players like Will Cuylle, Jimmy Vesey, and Matt Rempe. Additionally, the Rangers have limited cap space, with only $700,000 available and 46 of their 50 contract slots already filled, according to CapWages.
