BREAKING: 4 star DB Flips to Mississippi State from Alabama
Former Alabama defensive back Tony Mitchell announced his commitment to Mississippi State on Thursday. Mitchell, originally a standout player from Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama, appeared in seven games as a true freshman for the Crimson Tide in 2023. After transferring to East Mississippi Community College in April, he will join Mississippi State with two seasons of eligibility starting in 2025.
Tony Mitchell, a four-star recruit from the Class of 2023 out of Thompson High School, encountered off-field issues before making his debut at Alabama. In March 2023, he was arrested following a high-speed chase in Florida. Authorities found 226 grams of marijuana, approximately $7,000 in cash, a scale, and a loaded gun in the car. Mitchell’s passenger, Christopher Lewis, was also arrested during the incident. These legal troubles preceded Mitchell’s eventual transfer from Alabama to East Mississippi Community College before his recent commitment to Mississippi State.
Tony Mitchell pleaded no contest to a felony marijuana possession charge following his March 2023 arrest, which resulted in a sentence of three years of probation and mandatory drug counseling. Due to this incident, Alabama head coach Nick Saban suspended Mitchell indefinitely from spring practice. However, Mitchell was allowed to rejoin the team during the summer. In the 2023 season, Mitchell primarily contributed on special teams, recording one tackle. He also participated in Alabama’s 2024 spring practice before entering the transfer portal, ultimately transferring to Mississippi State.
