Report: Packers Are Nearing Benchmarking Quarterback
Despite Malik Willis leading the Green Bay Packers to back-to-back victories, there is no quarterback controversy. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Willis is likely to be benched soon as Jordan Love nears a return from his MCL sprain sustained in Week 1. Graziano noted, “Technically, it’s the Packers’ Malik Willis, since Jordan Love sounds like he’s close to coming back.” The Packers have been pleasantly surprised by Willis’ performance in Love’s absence.
The Packers traded for Malik Willis on August 26, following a preseason filled with errors from their backup quarterbacks. Willis, a standout from Liberty, made his first start for Green Bay on September 15, leading the team to victories over the Indianapolis Colts and his former team, the Tennessee Titans. So far, Willis has completed 25 of 34 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 12 times for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Although Jordan Love, who suffered an MCL sprain in Week 1, was not placed on injured reserve, the Packers expect him to return soon. Head coach Matt LaFleur mentioned that Love will be limited in practice on Wednesday. As Green Bay prepares for a home game in Week 4 against their NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings, it’s possible that Willis could be benched in favor of Love.
