Report: Braves’ postseason hopes are seriously hampered by scheduling conflicts
The Atlanta Braves are facing a major hurdle in their playoff pursuit due to scheduling issues caused by weather. They’re chasing the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League Wild Card spot. However, heavy rain is complicating things. Wednesday’s game against the Mets at Truist Park was postponed due to rain, and more rain from Hurricane Helene is expected to hit Atlanta on Thursday, likely leading to another postponement. The plan is for a doubleheader on Monday if the results of those games affect the playoff race.
The Braves are scheduled to host the Kansas City Royals for a three-game series starting Friday. Although the worst of the weather is anticipated to pass by then, the Braves can’t afford any postponements for these games. The Royals are also in a tight race for the final American League Wild Card spot and need to play as well.
In other words, Monday could see a doubleheader between the Braves and Mets, with the playoff outcomes for one or both teams hanging in the balance. The NL Wild Card playoffs are set to begin on Tuesday, adding to the complications of the situation.
As of Wednesday, the Mets hold a half-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second of three NL Wild Card spots. The Braves are one game behind the Mets and half a game behind Arizona. The outcome of that Monday doubleheader could ultimately determine the fate of their seasons, as well as Arizona’s.
