BREAKING: Colts GM Chris Ballard Confirms Major Decision on Anthony Richardson Amid quarterback’s controversy
The Colts must continue to exercise patience with their second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, who, despite facing early challenges, has immense potential and just needs more experience. Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s ‘The Opening Drive’ with Solomon Wilcots, Colts GM Chris Ballard emphasized the need for patience as Richardson navigates a “rollercoaster” start to the 2024 season.
Richardson showed improvement in Week 4, completing 3 of 4 passes for 71 yards against the Steelers after struggling with accuracy the previous week. However, he sustained a hip/oblique injury during a 14-yard run when he failed to slide, and after briefly returning, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game. His availability for this weekend’s game against Jacksonville is uncertain, which holds personal significance as Richardson is from Gainesville, Florida.
In four games this season, Richardson has completed 39 of 77 passes (50.6%) for 654 yards, with 3 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His performance may be affected by the long layoff after a season-ending shoulder injury in his rookie year. The Colts expected growing pains from the 21-year-old quarterback, especially given his limited experience with only 13 starts at the University of Florida before being drafted fourth overall in 2023.
“We live in a world of instant gratification,” Colts GM Chris Ballard said on Wednesday. “People expect players to step on the field and be stars right away. I heard you mention C.J. Stroud and his immediate impact, but every player develops differently.”
“We always knew Anthony would need more time. There would be moments of brilliance and tough challenges, but that’s part of the process.”
“Look around the league—Josh Allen didn’t dominate from the start, and now he’s one of the top quarterbacks. You just have to stay patient.”
While veteran Joe Flacco stepped in last week and delivered a solid performance, leading the Colts to victory, there is no quarterback controversy in Indianapolis. Flacco, signed to a one-year deal, brings experience and stability, but the Colts’ long-term future rests with Richardson. Though Flacco could keep the Colts competitive in the short term, Richardson needs to develop through game reps to realize his full potential.

The Colts knew when they drafted Richardson that they were betting on his elite athleticism and arm talent, which rivals that of any young quarterback, including 2024’s first overall pick, Caleb Williams. But Richardson’s success is crucial to the team’s future. If he reaches his potential, he could be the franchise’s cornerstone for years to come. If not, the Colts might find themselves searching for another quarterback soon. Regardless, they’re committed to giving Richardson the time and experience he needs to grow, and it’s a gamble they’re willing to take.
