The Cincinnati Bengals may have let their opportunity slip away during the initial phase of the Joe Burrow era. With a disappointing 1-4 record to start the 2024 season, the team is facing significant challenges, leading to discussions about how to best utilize their assets moving forward. Essentially, it appears that all players, except for Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, might be on the trading block.

One of the team’s most valuable assets, aside from Burrow and Chase, is wide receiver Tee Higgins. He is currently playing under the franchise tag worth $21.816 million for the 2024 season and had previously sought a trade after not receiving a contract extension.

Tee Higgins Career Stats - NFL - ESPN

On October 8, ESPN’s Ben Solak proposed a trade scenario involving Higgins moving to the Washington Commanders in exchange for conditional third-round picks in 2025 and 2026. After missing the first two games of the season due to a hamstring injury, Higgins has recorded 18 receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns over three games.

Solak emphasized that the Commanders, having struggled at last year’s trade deadline, could become active buyers this time around, especially with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels performing well. He noted that Higgins would be a valuable asset in the vertical passing game that fits Daniels’ style, enhancing an area where the Commanders currently lack depth .

Higgins’ Offseason Filled With Drama Over Contract

Tee Higgins

In Super Bowl LVI, Tee Higgins had an impressive performance despite the Cincinnati Bengals’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams, recording four receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns. This game highlighted Higgins’ potential as a key offensive player.

However, in 2023, Higgins experienced a significant drop in production, recording career lows with just 42 receptions, 656 receiving yards, and five touchdowns. His struggles were compounded by injuries, as he missed a career-high six games due to rib and hamstring issues, impacting his ability to contribute consistently throughout the season .

Higgins’ Market Value Skyrocketed in Offseason

The Cincinnati Bengals had a missed opportunity to extend Tee Higgins’ contract for what could now be seen as a bargain price. After the previous season, Higgins reportedly sought a three-year, $70 million extension, which was similar to the deal signed by Indianapolis Colts receiver Michael Pittman in February 2024.

Since then, wide receiver contracts have surged, with five of the six largest contracts for the position in NFL history being signed during that period. As these deals inflated the market, Higgins’ value also increased significantly. According to Spotrac, Higgins’ current market value is estimated at a five-year, $98.5 million contract, averaging $19.7 million per year .

This increase in value means that if traded, Higgins could potentially step in as a top receiver, challenging for the number one spot on a team like the Washington Commanders .
