BREAKING: Oilers Prospect Leaves Organization, Signs with Division Rival Team
The Edmonton Oilers made a significant move this offseason by acquiring Matthew Savoie, a recent top 10 draft pick, but they also parted ways with his brother. According to NHL insider Jim Matheson, He has signed with the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Oilers this summer.
He as an Edmonton native, was drafted by the Oilers in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. Despite a few seasons with the Bakersfield Condors, he struggled to make an impact, scoring just 10 goals and 22 points in 63 games last season. While there were rumors that the Oilers might bring Carter back to play alongside his brother in the AHL, it didn’t materialize.
This departure follows another loss for the Oilers, as prospect Raphael Lavoie was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights, marking the second young player Edmonton has lost in a short period. Although Carter Savoie is seen as a long shot to make the NHL, his departure adds to concerns about the Oilers’ prospect depth.
On the brighter side, the Oilers secured Matthew Savoie, the more highly regarded brother. Drafted 9th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2022, Matthew is known for his elite offensive potential, and if developed properly, he could thrive in Edmonton’s top six. The Oilers now hold his rights for several years, giving them time to integrate him into the lineup.

With these roster moves, Oilers executives Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman face the challenge of replenishing young talent while keeping the team competitive in their quest for a Stanley Cup.
