JUST IN: Jim Montgomery gets brutally honest and sends strong message to players after loss to Panthers
One thing is becoming clearer. The Florida Panthers are playing mind games against the Boston Bruins, and guess what? They are winning. They are currently winning all aspects of the game, including psychologically, physically, and on the scoreboard. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery has taken notice.
The Panthers defeated the Bruins 4-3 on Monday afternoon at TD Garden, their second win in six days. It was a physical battle, and the Black and Gold were once again unable to manage their rage, while Florida happily allowed them to self-destruct at times. Following the game, Montgomery addressed several of his players.
Jim Montgomery puts players on blast after latest Panthers loss
The opening night loss was frustrating for the Bruins, and it was clear the Panthers were in their heads, whether Boston acknowledges it or not. Once again, the fourth line stood out as the team’s best, while the other lines struggled, something head coach Jim Montgomery emphasized after the defeat.
“Really happy with the bottom six … and the fourth line has been very, very impressive,” Montgomery said. “They’re just doing their role. Guys in the top six aren’t doing their role.”
While the Bruins’ third line hasn’t been bad, it’s evident the third-year coach is dissatisfied with the top six forwards. Without the contributions of the bottom-six, especially the fourth line, would Boston have started 2-2 in their first four games? Likely not.
As the Bruins prepare for a tough three-game road trip against the Colorado Avalanche, Utah Hockey Club, and Nashville Predators, their success hinges on the top six responding to their coach’s message and turning things around. If they don’t, the early part of the season could become difficult, especially with a grueling October schedule ahead. The top six need to figure things out quickly.
