Nick Saban, widely regarded as the greatest coach in college football history, announced his retirement following the 2023 season after securing seven national titles, six of which were with Alabama. His departure paved the way for Kalen DeBoer to take over the Crimson Tide program.

As DeBoer works to maintain Alabama’s championship culture, Saban has transitioned to a television role, joining the “College GameDay” crew on ESPN alongside Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Pat McAfee, Desmond Howard, and Rece Davis.

This past Saturday, the “College GameDay” team broadcasted from Austin, Texas, for the highly anticipated game between the No. 1 Texas Longhorns and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. After discussing this marquee matchup, the panel shifted focus to the upcoming game featuring No. 7 Alabama against No. 11 Tennessee.

Saban, who noted that the Crimson Tide are 3-point favorites in the contest, emphasized the importance of defending against third-down conversions, which has been a season-long struggle for Alabama. “Let me say this: they better get off the field on third down,” he asserted, reiterating this message multiple times during the broadcast.

Currently, Alabama holds a 5-1 record for the season, including a surprising loss to Vanderbilt a few weeks ago, but they also secured impressive wins, such as a 41-34 triumph over Georgia in Week 4.

While the Crimson Tide boast star power on offense, with quarterback Jalen Milroe and wide receiver Ryan Williams leading the charge, their defense has faced challenges. In their only defeat, a 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt, the Commodores converted 12 of 18 third downs.

This issue persisted in Alabama’s most recent outing, a narrow 27-25 victory over South Carolina, where the Gamecocks succeeded on 7 of 15 third-down attempts, particularly excelling in the second half. Overall, Alabama has allowed an average of 20.8 points per game, with three teams scoring 25 or more points against them this season.
