Head coach Mike Tomlin made the decision following Wilson’s return from a calf injury, which forced the team to choose between Wilson and Justin Fields, who has led the Steelers to a surprising 4-2 start.

Just one day before their prime-time matchup against the New York Jets, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the news, adding that while Wilson will get the majority of offensive snaps, both quarterbacks are expected to see playing time. This will mark Wilson’s first appearance of the 2024 season, with his last game action dating back to December 2023. Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to be the team’s starting quarterback, Wilson has been sidelined by a calf injury that was initially considered minor but later became more serious, nearly placing him on injured reserve.

Despite Wilson being the designated starter, Fields’ performance has sparked debate. Although he hasn’t been highly efficient as a passer, his dynamic rushing ability and leadership have propelled the Steelers to an impressive early record. Some fans and analysts have questioned whether Fields should retain the starting role based on his contributions to the team’s success thus far.

The move to start Wilson was all but confirmed when Steelers wide receiver George Pickens hinted at the decision, stating that Week 7 would mark Wilson’s first start with the team. The Steelers now face the challenge of integrating Wilson back into the lineup while maintaining the momentum they’ve built with Fields under center.

After a week of deliberation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have officially named Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for Week 7.

Steelers face the Jets with new quarterback

In Week 7’s Sunday Night Football, the Steelers will unveil a revamped offense, led by Wilson in his debut with the team. Despite no significant personnel changes, the offense will undergo a major transformation as Wilson’s approach starkly contrasts with Fields’ style.

Through six games, Fields has thrown for only 1,106 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 231 yards and five scores. However, the team has surpassed 20 points in just two of those games, relying more on their defense than Fields’ play.

Although Wilson is statistically a stronger passer, his recent performance has faced criticism. Many believe the nine-time Pro Bowler has declined since leaving the Seattle Seahawks in 2022.
