Rumors are swirling around Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj, as analysts suggest the team may face limited interest in trading him due to concerns about his long-term NHL fit. In Monday’s episode of *The Hockey Writers Roundtable,* Matthew Zator and Jacob Billington discussed Xhekaj’s current standing, with Billington commenting, “If you’re not making the Montreal Canadiens defense group, you’re not that good,” highlighting skepticism regarding his market value.

Despite Xhekaj’s reputation for physical play, the analysts pointed out that his skill set may not secure him a stable role on NHL rosters. Billington noted that Xhekaj’s role as an enforcer—rather than a top defensive asset—could also hinder his trade value, especially for teams prioritizing skill over toughness on their blue line.

Xhekaj’s intense physicality has also earned him a reputation among referees, with some analysts and fans believing he’s been subject to extra scrutiny. A recent incident underscored this perception: after Philadelphia’s Sean Couturier landed a high hit on Montreal’s Kirby Dach, Xhekaj immediately stepped in to defend his teammate. However, before the fight could begin, Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler blindsided Xhekaj with a punch, creating an unexpected two-on-one altercation.

Despite Seeler’s interference, officials called Xhekaj for unsportsmanlike conduct, a decision that added to the belief that the league may be sending a message for him to rein in his aggressive style.

As Montreal navigates its rebuilding phase, Xhekaj’s situation reflects the challenge of balancing toughness with skill in the current NHL climate.
