The Bruins, aiming to shake off tentative play, have called up a forward known for his fearless style. Jeffrey Viel, promoted from the AHL’s Providence Bruins ahead of Monday’s game against Columbus, is anything but timid.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pound winger has recorded two goals and two assists in 14 games for Providence this season but is better known for his toughness and willingness to defend teammates. Viel leads the P-Bruins with 39 penalty minutes, building a reputation as a scrappy enforcer unafraid to take on larger opponents—including a memorable fight with Zdeno Chara, who stands seven inches taller and nearly 50 pounds heavier.

The 27-year-old Viel brings NHL experience, with 139 penalty minutes across 49 games, all previously with the San Jose Sharks. During training camp, Viel returned from an injury to play in the Bruins’ preseason game against the Kings in Quebec City, where he dropped the gloves with Andre Lee shortly after exiting the penalty box.

Viel joins the lineup in place of Mark Kastelic, who suffered an injury in Saturday’s game. Meanwhile, Riley Tufte has been reassigned to Providence, while Tyler Johnson and Andrew Peeke return to action. Cole Koepke will sit as a healthy scratch.
