While all of the off-season focus is on high-profile free agents, the Yankees are discreetly recruiting veteran players in preparation for spring training next year.

Minor League Deal for Pablo Reyes

On Monday, the Yankees signed journeyman super-utility player Pablo Reyes to a minor-league deal. Reyes, who played for the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets in 2024, appeared in 22 games and batted for five runs and five RBIs.183/.234/.217.

In a bigger sample size, Reyes has an 18.2% strikeout rate, a 7.9% walk rate, a.248 batting average, and a 78 wRC+. His career stats include eight home runs, 54 RBIs, and thirteen stolen bases. While his offensive numbers aren’t very impressive, Reyes’ defensive versatility adds value.

Utility Value and Positional Flexibility

Throughout his career, Reyes has showed his versatility by playing first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions. This type of defensive flexibility is a significant asset for any club, and the Yankees value having versatile guys available in the minors for depth and emergencies.

Complementing Existing Utility Options

The Yankees already have DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera as primary utility players, but given LeMahieu’s age, adding extra competition and depth is a wise decision. Reyes is anticipated to compete in Triple-A next year, offering crucial veteran experience and insurance in case of injuries or other needs during the season.
