LSU had Belleville, Michigan standout player, the second-ranked prospect in the 2025 class, committed since January. It seemed the Tigers might fend off a late push by Michigan, especially after his recent visit to Baton Rouge, but that didn’t hold true.

Michigan urgently needed a quarterback in this class, as offensive struggles have plagued the Wolverines this season. Four-star prospect Carter Smith recently decommitted from Michigan amid the heightened focus on Underwood, with Wisconsin now emerging as the leader in Smith’s recruitment.

Underwood, a five-star talent who could challenge for the No. 1 overall spot in the class (currently held by Ohio State commit Tavien St. Clair), has the potential to step in as Michigan’s starter next season. Despite being lukewarm toward the Wolverines for much of his recruitment, Underwood’s relationship with LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan kept him committed. However, in recent days, momentum shifted toward Michigan.

People in Underwood’s circle began leaning toward the Wolverines, and he ultimately decided it was the best move for his future. Initially, there was speculation that he might flip his commitment during a visit to Michigan for their game against Northwestern, but the news broke Thursday that he had made his decision.

This announcement coincided with another significant recruiting shake-up: five-star quarterback Julian Lewis flipped his commitment from USC to Colorado earlier that day, while four-star QB Husan Longstreet recently switched from Texas A&M to USC. The quarterback recruiting landscape remains fluid, with LSU and Texas A&M now scrambling to find signal-callers for this cycle.

Michigan’s quarterback coach Sherrone Moore hinted at this development earlier, flashing a knowing smile when asked about the Wolverines’ QB situation at a recent press conference, saying only, “We’ll be fine.”

Indeed, Michigan is more than fine after securing Underwood’s flip.
