The Los Angeles Angels traded right-hander to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for power hitter Jorge Soler. However, Canning’s stint with the Braves was short-lived, as the team announced on Friday that he, along with left-hander Ray Kerr, outfielder Ramón Laureano, and right-handers Royber Salinas and Huascar Ynoa, will not be tendered contracts for the 2025 season.

Griffin Canning is now a free agent following his non-tender by the Atlanta Braves. While there was speculation he could thrive in an organization renowned for pitching development, Canning is now searching for his next opportunity.

Griffin Canning strikes out eight in final spring start for Angels

Canning, a former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2017 MLB Draft, debuted in 2019 but struggled to establish consistency throughout his career. As a rookie, he posted a 5-6 record with a 4.58 ERA and 96 strikeouts over 90.1 innings. His best season came in 2020 when he recorded a 3.99 ERA over 11 starts and won a Gold Glove for his defensive contributions.

In 2024, Canning set a career-high with 31 starts but finished 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA, ranking among the American League’s weakest starters. His velocity and performance dipped compared to 2023, raising further concerns about his ability to anchor a rotation.

Injuries have also plagued Canning’s career, including elbow inflammation as a rookie and a back stress fracture in 2021, which sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. However, he has been mostly healthy over the past two years, pitching a full season in 2024.

Optimists believe Canning could thrive with a team skilled in developing pitchers, provided he stays healthy. His career has yet to meet expectations, but a fresh start might offer the right environment for a turnaround.
