Angels catcher has signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, earning $1 million in the majors and $400,000 if he plays in the minors.

Matt Thaiss: Rising Star Of Major League Baseball

Thaiss joined the Cubs on Wednesday following a trade with the Los Angeles Angels, who had designated him for assignment on November 14.

The 29-year-old, who debuted in the majors in 2019, carries a career .208 batting average with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs across six seasons, all spent with the Angels. This past season, he hit .204 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 157 at-bats over 57 games.

The trade comes shortly after the Angels signed veteran catcher Travis d’Arnaud to a two-year, $12 million contract. With rising star Logan O’Hoppe expected to take on the bulk of catching duties next season, Thaiss became expendable.

Thaiss, originally drafted 16th overall by the Angels in the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia, now looks for a fresh start with the Cubs.
