As MLB’s Winter Meetings commence, Juan Soto’s free agency is set to dominate headlines until he decides his future. The New York Yankees are eager to retain their star outfielder for the long term, but competition is fierce. Reports surfaced Saturday indicating that the New York Mets have extended an offer exceeding $730 million to lure Soto away from the Yankees. Jon Heyman of the New York Post also revealed that both the Mets and Yankees have submitted bids of at least $710 million.

The big question remains: will Soto choose the highest bidder, or does his experience in the Bronx give the Yankees an edge? Former MLB slugger Todd Frazier weighed in on the Foul Territory show, predicting Soto will stay with the Yankees. “I think he is going to be a Yankee,” Frazier said. “I see it being around 14 years, $700 million. He’s 26, so he likely wants to play until he’s 40. I think that’s the right offer—$50 million a year for 14 years.”

New MLB rumor delivers update on Juan Soto's expected yearly salary with either Mets, Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers

Such a deal would set a new record for annual average salary, depending on deferred money. Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million contract holds the current record at $46 million annually, with $680 million deferred. While the Yankees might not offer the highest bid, Heyman notes they have an “edge” due to two factors: Soto’s preference for hitting in front of Aaron Judge and his admiration for the two-time AL MVP’s clubhouse leadership.
