The New York Yankees are exploring their next moves after losing out on Juan Soto, who signed a record-breaking $765 million deal with the New York Mets. While Soto’s absence leaves a glaring void in the Yankees’ batting order, it also offers some financial flexibility to address multiple roster needs. Among the intriguing possibilities is a proposal from Peter Appel of Just Baseball suggesting a blockbuster trade for Adolis García of the Texas Rangers.

García, who is under a team-friendly two-year, $14 million contract and remains arbitration-eligible through 2026, could be a cost-effective solution to bolster the Yankees’ lineup. Paired with Aaron Judge, García’s power potential could help compensate for the loss of Soto. The 2023 season saw García hit 39 home runs, earn MVP votes, a Gold Glove, and his second All-Star selection. However, his production dipped in 2024, with a .224/.284/.400 slash line and defensive struggles, including a .986 fielding percentage and four errors in right field.

The Yankees might be able to “buy low” if the Rangers are open to moving García after his down year. According to Appel, the Yankees could offer one of their top prospects, such as outfielder Spencer Jones, in a one-for-one swap. Jones, known for his power, has struggled with consistency in the minors, posting back-to-back seasons with an OPS under .800. Alternatively, a package centered around shortstop prospect Roderick Arias, paired with another player, could also entice the Rangers.

If the Yankees are serious about landing García, they must decide whether to leverage their limited farm system for immediate help. Losing Soto has already increased the urgency to find a big bat and additional roster upgrades. A trade for García could be the bold move needed to revitalize the lineup and keep the team in contention for a World Series run.
