BREAKING: 5-Star EDGE Announces Return With Six-Word Message After Entering Transfer Portal
Auburn EDGE Amaris Williams, one of the top defenders in the transfer portal, has decided to remain with the Tigers after initially announcing his intentions to transfer. Williams, a five-star recruit in the 2023 class out of Clinton High School (North Carolina), was a key signee for head coach Hugh Freeze. Ranked as the No. 5 EDGE and the No. 30 overall recruit by 247Sports, Williams chose Auburn over powerhouse programs like Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Penn State.
The decision to stay was revealed just a day after Williams announced his intention to transfer. In a statement shared via On3, Williams posted, “God said it’s gon be alright,” signaling a change of heart following conversations with Freeze and Auburn’s staff.
Williams played sparingly in his true freshman season, recording six tackles and half a sack in 10 games. Auburn’s defense was a strong point during a 5-7 campaign, allowing just 21.3 points per game. Retaining Williams could significantly bolster the Tigers’ defensive core as they look to build toward a more competitive 2025 season.
Offensively, Auburn is addressing key needs by signing former five-star Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold, who will take the reins following the departure of Payton Thorne via the transfer portal. With Williams staying and the offense adding a potential game-changer in Arnold, Freeze and his staff appear to be making strides in their rebuilding efforts.
The winter transfer portal window remains open through December 28, with another window scheduled for April 16-25, leaving plenty of opportunities for further roster adjustments.
