The Houston Astros seem to be entering a period of mild rebuilding. While their approach won’t mirror the full-scale rebuilds of teams like the Miami Marlins or Chicago White Sox, the Astros are looking to move expiring contracts in exchange for younger talent. This process began with the trade of star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs for infielder Isaac Paredes, prospect Cam Smith, and a pitcher. The team might continue this trend by trading another key player. SBNation’s John Stolnis recently speculated that the Astros could explore dealing star closer Ryan Pressly this winter. Pressly, in the final year of his $30 million contract, is owed $14 million for 2025. Despite being a solid reliever with a 3.49 ERA in 59 appearances, his performance declined slightly, with his strikeout rate dropping and his WHIP rising. Stolnis noted that Pressly could be an affordable option for teams seeking a veteran right-handed reliever for high-leverage situations. Trading Pressly would make sense unless the Astros plan on extending him, especially with the potential loss of third baseman Alex Bregman and the departure of Tucker. Trading Pressly for prospects could help the Astros retool their roster for a strong push toward the 2026 World Series.
