BREAKING: Padres Fan Favorite Announces Sudden Retirement At 34 Years Old
Wil Myers, a former Rookie of the Year and one-time All-Star, has announced he’s stepping away from baseball, as reported by AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Over an 11-season MLB career spanning three teams, Myers spent eight years with the San Diego Padres. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the third round in 2009, Myers never made it to the majors with Kansas City. Instead, he debuted with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013 at age 22, earning the American League Rookie of the Year title with a .293/.354/.478 slash line and a 131 OPS+.
Following a trade from the Rays to the Padres in the 2014 offseason, Myers played 888 games for San Diego over eight seasons. His standout year came in 2016, when he posted 3.5 WAR and hit .259/.336/.461 with 28 home runs across 157 games. Myers wrapped up his career with the Cincinnati Reds in 2023, hitting three home runs in 37 games while battling shoulder injuries.
Though Myers hinted he would never “officially” retire, he reflected positively on his career. “I had a great career. I loved what I did. I made a lot of great friends. I have no regrets,” Myers told Cassavell. “If you had told me the day I was drafted that this would be your career, I would’ve taken it in a heartbeat. I loved what I did, and now it’s just kind of onto the next chapter of life.”
