Free agent first baseman remains the top offensive player available on the market. While the New York Mets are actively negotiating to retain him in Queens, a team from the West has emerged as a strong contender for his services.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants are keeping a close eye on free agent slugger Pete Alonso.

“The Giants remain in the market for a first baseman or DH, too, and four-time All-Star Pete Alonso, who has hit 226 home runs in six seasons with the Mets, is on their radar,” Slusser reported.

After missing out on star pitcher Corbin Burnes—who signed a six-year, $210 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks—the Giants may shift their focus to bolstering their offense. This offseason, they have already made a significant move by signing shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million contract.

Adding Alonso would provide the Giants with a significant power upgrade in the infield, addressing their need for a reliable middle-of-the-lineup presence. After finishing the 2023 season with an 80-82 record and missing the playoffs, the Giants are looking to bounce back. They have not returned to the postseason since their 107-win campaign and NL West division title in 2021.

With pitching options dwindling, improving their offensive firepower could be the Giants’ best path forward.

The Mets are not close on a deal with Alonso

The Mets remain eager to re-sign Pete Alonso, especially after securing Juan Soto on a mega contract. Bringing Alonso back would solidify one of the league’s most potent offenses, with Alonso offering crucial lineup protection for Soto.

However, negotiations have hit a snag, with Jon Heyman of the New York Post reporting a “sizable gap” between Alonso and the Mets. Alonso recently declined a three-year, $90 million offer from the team and is now considering offers from several other clubs in need of a power-hitting first baseman. While Alonso’s next contract is expected to be finalized soon, which team he will ultimately join remains uncertain.
