ESPN REPORT: Mics Caught Kevin O’Connell’s sent Heartfelt Mid-Game Message to Vikings QB Sam Darnold
Sam Darnold is having a breakout season that has revitalized his career, and no one seems to appreciate it more than his coach.
During the Minnesota Vikings’ thrilling 27–25 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 17, head coach Kevin O’Connell paused to offer Darnold some heartfelt praise. Before delivering a play call, O’Connell expressed how impressed and proud he was of the quarterback’s performance.
“You’re playing your absolute a– off… Keep making great decisions, man. You’re balling. I’m so freaking proud of you,” O’Connell told him.
In his first season with the Vikings, Darnold earned the starting job after rookie J.J. McCarthy, the team’s first-round pick, suffered an injury before the season began. Darnold seized the opportunity and hasn’t looked back.
Heading into a crucial Week 18 matchup against the Detroit Lions, the Vikings boast a 14–2 record, and Darnold has delivered stellar individual numbers. He’s completed 68.1% of his passes, ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards (4,153), fifth in passing touchdowns (35), and fifth in passer rating (106.4). His efforts have also earned him his first Pro Bowl selection.
O’Connell’s pride in Darnold is well-justified—he’s been exceptional all season.
